Diabetes victory of the week: After transcribing an interview in which an Australian man was emphatically criticizing the eating habits of diabetics, I admitted that I probably could do more to cut out unnecessary carbs. My concerns were the cost of eating more meat and vegetables, the length of time required for preparation of low carb foods (veggies and meat are harder to prepare than, let's say, crackers), and, knowing that I will still get low blood sugars because I will still mess up my insulin delivery SOMETIMES. But I decided that the baby is worth the cost and time, and since I was going to have to deal with lows either way, I might as well try. It's really helping. Blood sugars are much more even. I used to restrict carbs to 50g per sitting/meal. Now I'm down to more like 20g, and the bulk of that comes from vegetables. Treating lows is still a bit of a challenge, but with less insulin on board from meals and longer lasting fats/proteins holding up my blood sugar a little bit better, guessing how much I need to eat to bring my blood sugar up is not quite as tricky.

Diabetes failure of the week: Nothing, really. That feels pretty good to say!

Mostly unfounded fear of the week: The pain of childbirth. That's actually not unfounded, though. :)

Mostly intangible joy of the week: Celebrating two of my sons' birthdays this week. They are a lot of fun to be around, and to see their joy at the simplest of things -- going to the pool, eating ice cream, seeing their grandparents and cousins, opening up birthday cards -- was very heartwarming and energizing.

I went to visit the OB for the first time this week. I was REALLY concerned about being scolded for not coming in sooner. They were surprised and a little bit confused about how to handle it, but not disapproving. I think they could tell I felt pretty confident about what was happening to my body, and that there really just wasn't anything wrong that they needed to fix, and so the appointment proceeded easily.
